The Different Sections of the Colosseum:
#1 The Substructure- This is the area under the arena where the animals were kept in cages until they were needed in the arena. There were also lifts that would bring the animals into the arena.
#2 The Arena- This is the place where all of the competing and entertainment took place.
#3 Seating- There were different sections of where people could sit based on their importance and other factors such as gender . For example, the rich people would get seats closer up where as people like the women would get seats in the back of the Colosseum.
#4 Awnings- These provided shade during the summer months when it would get extremely hot.
#5 The Circulation System- There were eighty half columns that went around an opening that would allow light to pass through.
Things the original Colosseum contained:
There were drains built that would take away the excess water from the surrounding hills.
The foundation of the Colosseum was made of concrete.
The original idea was that the Colosseum would be about about 300 x 180 Roman feet.
The idea then changed and the new perimeter of the Colosseum became 660 x 540 Roman feet.
It was a hard task to calculate the perimeter because the entrances had to be somehow calculated into that total number.
The entrances came to about 20 Roman feet wide and with that calculated they got the total perimeter of the Colosseum.
